To Build or to Buy?

Our connected world has resulted in even more choice for businesses who are considering a new creative, cost-effective, digital development project. Your Options? Employ internal staff, pay ‘The Big Agency’ fees, outsource or pay online freelancers…or work with SixPorts?

If you choose to build it yourself, you gain a number of benefits including complete control of the project and management of individuals in your workplace. However, you’ll also take on all the overheads, management, training and long-term planning for those individuals too – which may not fit into your strategy and negatively affect other projects.

When looking at more cost-effective solutions the options are either to outsource the project or use freelancers – the disadvantage of this strategy is that they could be anyone or anywhere based anywhere in the world. If budget is absolutely key, but time and quality is of minimal importance, then this approach may be for you.

Alternatively, you may choose to outsource your project which involves committing a great deal of effort and your own time (in terms of briefing and chasing) with the results being sporadic and often leaving you frustrated. With this strategy, logistics are often challenging and details can be lost when communicating high-level briefs, on different time-zones, especially when the outsourced individual has a limited understanding of your business. The added risk of the ‘freelancer world’ includes frequent disappearing acts, or worse – still being “online”, but prioritising higher paid-work over yours.

If you employ a ‘specialist’ into your own business, with the hope they will have a greater chance of buying into your culture and understanding the project requirements better than freelancers… but unless they’re multi-skilled, or you have long-term projects, these people could become unproductive or an unrequired salary post-launch.

Obviously, SixPorts believe in “buying” from experts, whose primary business and being is to constantly learn, innovate and deliver for innovative companies who want to utilise our expertise and experience.

The more experienced the agency, the more closely they will cross-examine your brief, requirements and goals, and try their very best to match your culture, model and budget. This will ultimately take the stress and strain off design, delivery and testing from you, as well as the multitude of daily challenges building custom projects faces. To really make this happen you’ll want to meet the team and see a good blend of skilled people – design, commercial and creative thinkers, talkers and the technical coders!

Big city agencies charge significantly larger fees than SixPorts, and may be established names over decades, which brings a certain amount of perceived safety and trust. Whether your fees pay for several directors input and senior developers working on your project is crucial to whether you truly benefit from that price tag or not. Our team have the big-brand experience and are willing to use it, getting deeply involved and always welcoming clients to our own agency-cool office… let us show you…
